Astigmatism occurs when the cornea, the window at the
front of the eye, is not spherical in shape. This means that light entering
the eye is distorted and either glasses or contact lenses are required
for clear vision.
If you wish to reduce or eliminate your astigmatism with corneal
refractive surgery, the options are laser
eye surgery (in some cases) or astigmatic keratotomy. This section
provides information about astigmatic keratotomy. |

Astigmatic keratotomy
can be performed in the consulting suites. Prior to the procedure, we will
take very precise measurments of your cornea, including performing corneal
mapping or topography.
Anesthesia is provided simply with drops on the
eye. During the procedure, incisions are made in your cornea so that the
steep areas become flatter and the whole cornea adopts a more spherical
shape.
